After seeing a recent Yellowstone Gate article by photographer Meg Sommers about how she got a great shot of sandhill cranes, reader Mike Wheeler sent in a few great photos of his own. Wheeler was in Yellowstone National Park in October 2010, and had just finished a photography course taught by Sommers for the Yellowstone Association.

Wheeler was heading home from Yellowstone and it was early in the morning, with few people moving around in the park, when he saw a beta male wolf from the Canyon pack stalking a bison and its calf. Though it seemed at first the wolf was after the calf, Wheeler later learned that it brought down the adult bison, which was ill.

“We never heard what happened to the calf,” he recalls.

  4. Just wondering…what type of camera, lens and settings that it took to get these great shots. They are so clear and sharp. Great job!
