Authorities are investigating the circumstances behind a crash that has left two people dead when a small plane went down today in Grand Teton National Park.
Emergency responders arrived at the crash site near North Spring Gulch Road shortly after noon to find two people dead, according to a statement released by the park’s public affairs office. The victims were identified as Russell Kamtz, 67, and Carol Kamtz, 65, both of Loveland, Colo.
No others were found near the site of the crashed RV 7, a single-engine, two-seat airplane. The RV 7 kit plane, typically assembled by the buyer, is described on the website of manufacturer Van’s Aircraft as a sport airplane with aerobatic qualities.
The nearby Jackson Hole airport is the only U.S. airport located within a national park. It is Wyoming’s largest airport, and sits at 6,451 above sea level.
Weather in the area Wednesday was reported as mostly cloudy with light winds.
Specialists from the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
